A full spread of sushi has a lot going on, so it helps to take it slow. In this walkthrough I will show you how to draw a sushi platter, adding each roll and piece one at a time until the plate feels complete.
Drawing a Sushi Platter
This one runs a little longer at 19 steps, mostly because there are several pieces to arrange. We start with the plate, then place the rolls and nigiri, and finish with small toppings and dipping sauce. There is no rush between pieces.
The Finished Platter
Working with repeated shapes like rice rolls is a good way to practice spacing and consistency. If you would rather focus on a single piece first, the single sushi roll is a gentler start. For another Japanese dish, try the ramen bowl. The full set of food ideas lives on the food drawing hub.
How the Guide Works: Color Key
Colors on each image separate old lines from the new ones you are adding.
- Grey lines show the base sketch from earlier steps
- Red lines show what to draw in the current step
- Black lines are finished details from previous steps
Sketch each piece softly so you can nudge it into place before committing. Once the layout works, trace over your final lines with a pen, clean off the pencil, and use bright fillings against the white rice to make every piece stand out.
